Hybridity and hybrid organizations

This website addresses the social profit of public service delivery by hybrid organizations. Those are organizational forms that operate in the boarder area between state and market and which have to combine conflicting cultural orientations.

Hybrid organizations are no new or unimportant phenomena. The first hybrid organization date back to the 1700s (think of the Dutch West-Indian Company or the British East India Company). Today, millions of people worldwide depend on hybrids to collect their waste, provide them with housing, keep them safe or take them home after work.

Nevertheless, research on hybrids still is relatively scarce. It mainly focuses on what the effects of hybridity are on the organizations themselves and what its effects are on governmental steering and control. But what about the citizens and their needs? How are they affected by the provision of public services by hybrids?

This website is built on the data gathered for my PhD-research project on value pluralism in hybrid organizations in the Dutch waste management sector. For more information about this study, please contact me via de contact page.
